Great Professor!
Professor Steven Weller is a Professor of Electrical Engineering in the School of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering) at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He obtained his B.E. (Hons. I) degree in Computer Engineering in 1988, M.E. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1992, and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994, all from the University of Newcastle. From 1994 to 1997, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne. He joined the University of Newcastle in 1997 and has held several senior leadership positions, including Head of School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from 2007 to 2009, Assistant Dean Research in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment from 2011 to 2013, and Deputy Head of Faculty from 2013 to 2020. Between 2020 and 2023, he served as Director of the Science and Engineering Challenge, a national outreach program promoting STEM education to high school students. In March 2023, he became Executive Director, Engineering, Information and Computing Sciences at the Australian Research Council, while continuing as Professor at the University of Newcastle.
Professor Weller's research focuses on control theory and its applications in energy systems, climate economics, and cyber-security of modern power systems. He has produced over 127 publications, including influential works such as 'Expediting transition towards HELE coal-fired electricity generation technologies in Southeast Asia' (2021), 'The Social Cost of Carbon Dioxide: Policy and Methods for Pricing Greenhouse Gas Emissions' (2018), 'Model Predictive Control of Residential Energy Systems Using Energy Storage & Controllable Loads' (2017), and 'Distributed and Decentralized Control of Residential Energy Systems Incorporating Battery Storage' (2015). His scholarship has garnered more than 6,200 citations. Professor Weller has received numerous awards, including the IET Control Theory and its Applications Premium Award (2012), IFAC Foundation Award (2017) for contributions to sustainable development via control technology, Vice-Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2009), Teaching Innovation Award from the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (2012), Excellence in Engineering Education Award from the Institution of Engineers Australia (1999), and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales (2020). His leadership in research, education, and national STEM initiatives underscores his significant impact in the field of engineering.
