Professor Stewart Dunn is Professor of Psychological Medicine in the Sydney Medical School Northern at the University of Sydney, based at Royal North Shore Hospital. He holds a PhD and MPH. His initial doctoral research, conducted with Professor John Turtle AO at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, focused on education and psychological support for patients with diabetes. Dunn has held several prominent roles at the University of Sydney. He has been Professor of Psychological Medicine in the Northern Clinical School since 1995 and served as Associate Dean for Admissions in the Sydney Medical School from 2000 to 2019. He is the Founding Director of the Pam McLean Centre, teaches extensively in the Sydney Medical Program, and provides support for doctors and medical students experiencing hardship and trauma. Currently, he chairs the Human Research Ethics Committee for the Northern Sydney Local Health District. He was appointed a Sydney Medical School Foundation Fellow.
Dunn's clinical specialty is psycho-oncology, where he works with cancer patients and their families. His research specializations include the psychology of medical illness, doctor-patient communication, psycho-oncology, and related areas such as diabetes, asthma, and multiple sclerosis. His scholarly impact is significant, with his research ranked in the top 2% internationally by Stanford University in 2022 and recognized among the University of Sydney's global elite researchers. He has authored over 132 publications, accumulating more than 10,000 citations. Notable publications include 'eFOCUS 2: A randomised crossover trial of smartphone fundoscopy and direct ophthalmoscopy aiming to improve optic disc interpretation by medical students with e-learning support' (2021), 'Psychological and Medical Characteristics Associated with Non-Adherence to Prescribed Daily Inhaled Corticosteroid' (2020), 'The impact of delivery style on doctors' experience of stress during simulated bad news consultations' (2015), and 'The Australian Multicenter Trial of Growth Hormone (GH) Treatment in GH Deficient Adults: Changes in Body Composition and Serum Biochemistry' (1998). His work has influenced medical education, patient care, and interprofessional learning.
