About Stuart

Professor Stuart Cordwell is Professor of Analytical Biochemistry in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. He also serves as Academic Director of Sydney Mass Spectrometry, a Core Research Facility of the University. A graduate of the University of Sydney, he completed his PhD there in 1997. Prior to his current appointment in December 2004, Cordwell was Senior Research Fellow and Director of Research and Development at the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility.

Cordwell has been involved in proteomics research throughout his career, co-authoring the 1995 manuscript that defined the term 'proteome' in 'Progress with gene-product mapping of the Mollicutes: Mycoplasma genitalium'. He established the first laboratory-based undergraduate proteomics course in Australia. His research encompasses proteomics and mass spectrometry applications to protein post-translational modifications, bacterial membrane proteins, microbial pathogenesis, and cardiovascular proteomics. He leads the Cardiovascular Proteomics Group and Microbial Pathogenesis Group at the Charles Perkins Centre. Notable awards include the 2006 Selby Research Award for bacterial membrane proteins research and the Villum Kann Rasmussen VELUX Professorship for post-translational modification studies. He was President of the Australasian Proteomics Society from 2016 to 2020 and received the HUPO Appreciation of Service Award. Key publications feature 'Therapeutic inflammatory monocyte modulation using immune-modifying microparticles' (2014), 'Beyond gene expression: the impact of protein post-translational modifications in bacteria' (2014), 'Simultaneous glycan-peptide characterization using hydrophilic interaction chromatography and parallel fragmentation by CID, higher energy collisional dissociation, and electron transfer dissociation' (2011), 'Global Analysis of Outer Membrane Proteins from Leptospira interrogans Serovar Lai' (2002), and 'Proteome research: complementarity and limitations with respect to the RNA and DNA worlds' (1997). Cordwell has co-supervised 16 PhD students and over 20 Honours students.
