Stuart Ross is the Enterprise Professor in Criminology in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne and a Masters (Coursework) from the University of Surrey. Complementing his academic role, he serves as General Manager of the Research and Evaluation Unit at Corrections Victoria, Department of Justice. This dual position enables him to integrate practical insights from criminal justice administration into his scholarly work.
Ross specializes in the application of digital technologies in criminology, with research interests encompassing digital service delivery in corrections and criminal justice, engagement with forensic smartphone apps, primary crime prevention applications, police responses to domestic violence and risk management, victim support policies, sentencing, recidivism patterns among offenders, and motivations behind wildlife and game hunting violations. His key publications include "Police response to domestic violence: Making decisions about risk and risk management" (96 Dimensions citations), "Primary Crime Prevention Apps: A Typology and Scoping Review" (2021), "Digitalising corrections" (2024), "The Motivations of Recreational Hunters Who Violate Wildlife and Game Hunting Regulations: Implications for Crime Prevention" (2025), and the edited book "Crime, Victims and Policy: International Contexts, Local Experiences" (2015). Earlier contributions feature "Patterns of recidivism among prisoners released from custody in Victoria" (2007) and "Money laundering regulation and risk-based decision-making" (2007). Ross has led projects funded by the Australian Institute of Criminology, including studies on techno-social aspects of corrections and eRecovery app trials.
