Sudara Withana serves as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), a position he has held since May 2022. Prior to this academic role, he gained practical industry experience as a Civil Engineer at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) from July 2021 to April 2022. During his tenure there, he functioned as Engineer (Construction) in Rathnapura and took on responsibilities as Project Engineer for the Kahawatta-Pelmadulla Pipe Laying Project as well as the Augmentation of Balangoda Water Treatment Plant. Earlier in his career, from February 2020 to June 2021, Withana worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, contributing to research efforts in the field.
Withana's solid academic foundation includes a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (currently reading) and a Bachelor of the Science of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering, both from the University of Moratuwa. He further bolsters his qualifications with a Diploma in Management Accounting from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and an Advanced Certificate in Business English from the University of Colombo. His research interests focus on Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems, Transportation Planning, and Estimating software for the Construction Industry. Key publications include the conference paper 'Assessment of the Productivity Enhancement of using Construction Take-off Software' presented at the International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE) 2020 with co-authors AADAJ Perera and KSK Jayawardhana. Additionally, his paper 'Development of Decision Framework for Dynamic Signal Timing Design,' co-authored with JMSJ Bandara and HLK Perera, is under review for the Engineer: Journal of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. He has also co-authored 'Public Opinion and Policy Measures on Reducing the Gender Gap in Public Transport Modes' in the Research for Transport and Logistics Industry Proceedings (R4TLI 2024) with Naduni Samarasinghe and Niranga Amarasingha. Withana is affiliated with The Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka, the Engineering Council of Sri Lanka, and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science Student Chapter.
