About Sujit

Sujit Choudhry served as the Cecelia Goetz Professor of Law at New York University School of Law, where he founded and directed the Center for Constitutional Transitions. A preeminent scholar in comparative constitutional law, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Law from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School. Prior to joining NYU, Choudhry was the Scholl Professor of Law and Associate Dean at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, with additional appointments in the Department of Political Science and the Munk School of Global Affairs. He served as law clerk to Chief Justice Antonio Lamer of the Supreme Court of Canada and was counsel of record in numerous significant cases before the Court. His public service includes membership on the Governing Toronto Advisory Panel and the board of directors of Legal Aid Ontario.

Choudhry's academic interests center on comparative constitutional law, with a focus on constitutional design for divided societies and transitions from civil conflict to democratic stability. He has produced over 100 scholarly outputs, including nine edited volumes and highly cited works such as "Globalization in Search of Justification: Toward a Theory of Comparative Constitutional Interpretation" (1998), "The Migration of Constitutional Ideas" (2007), "Constitutional Design for Divided Societies: Integration or Accommodation?" (2008), and co-editor of "The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Constitution" (2016). Recognized with the Trudeau Fellowship in 2010 and named Practitioner of the Year by the South Asian Bar Association of Toronto in 2011, Choudhry has influenced global constitutional practice through advisory roles in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Tunisia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Sudan, Ukraine, Yemen, and Zimbabwe. He contributed to the United Nations Mediation Roster and consulted for the World Bank Institute. Later appointments include Dean of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law from 2015 to 2018, followed by his current role as Principal at Circle Barristers, litigating public law matters.
