About Suman

Dr. Suman Kalani serves as In-Charge Vice Principal and Associate Professor at SVKM's Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai, a position she has held after being promoted from Assistant Professor to Academic Level 13A effective April 2024. She joined the institution in 2006 and teaches core subjects including Law of Contracts, Intellectual Property Rights, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her academic qualifications include a PhD from SNDT Women’s University, awarded in May 2021, with the thesis titled "Online Dispute Resolution in India: A study of its Applicability, Acceptability, and Feasibility"; an LL.M. from the University of Mumbai; an LL.B. from Government Law College, Mumbai; a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Rights from the University of Mumbai; and a Post Graduate Diploma in Cyber Laws from National Law University, Hyderabad. Dr. Kalani chairs the college's Centre for Conflict Resolution, Centre for Corporate Laws and Intellectual Property Rights, and Centre for Robotics, AI, and Technology Law. She coordinates certificate courses in Securities Law with BSE Institute Limited, Mediation (40 hours), Corporate Governance, Intellectual Property Rights, and Technology Laws, as well as the ODR Simulation Tournament. Committed to experiential learning, she has conceptualized value-added courses to bridge academia and the legal industry.

Dr. Kalani's research focuses on mediation and online dispute resolution, with additional interests in law and technology intersections. She authored textbooks Business Law for First Year B.Com (Banking and Insurance) and Corporate Laws and Laws Governing the Capital Markets for Second Year B.Com (Banking and Insurance), both published by Vipul Prakashan. Notable publications include the chapter "Transition to Online Dispute Resolution: A mechanism to curb transaction cost in access to justice" in Law and Economics: Breaking New Grounds (Eastern Book Company, ISBN 9789351454625); "Law Teaching and Learning of Online Dispute Resolution Mechanisms" in Academic Leaders and Strategies of 21st Century (edited by Meera Shanker and Anita Chawre, ISBN 978935529725); editor of Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and Law (ISAIL, 2020); and journal articles such as "Legal Web for Digitalisation of Business" in International Journal of Advance and Innovative Research (Volume 8, Issue 3(V), July-September 2021). She received the Best Presenter Award at the ODR Policy Summit 2024 for "Automated Systems for resolving MSME Disputes"; Outstanding Educator Award from National Foundation for Entrepreneurship Development (2021); Best Research Paper at the 7th Innovation Summit (2019); and a WRIC-ICSSR research grant for "Two-Dimensional Study for the adoption of Mediation as a method of Dispute Resolution in India" (Rs. 50,000). Dr. Kalani has delivered guest lectures, conducted workshops on IPR and cyber laws, presented papers at national and international conferences, and judged legal competitions.
