About Sunghee

Sunghee Kim is Professor and Chairperson of the Computer Science Department at Gettysburg College, where she joined as Assistant Professor in Fall 2004. She earned her B.S. from the University of Utah in 1996, M.S. from the University of Minnesota in 1999, and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 2004. Prior to Gettysburg College, Kim served as a Research Assistant at the University of Minnesota with Professor Victoria Interrante on projects involving 3D shape perception starting from Fall 2000. She also worked as an Instructor for courses such as Introduction to Computer Programming in Java and Structure of Computer Programming in Java and Scheme, and as a Teaching Assistant for programming, numerical computing, numerical analysis, and advanced data structures courses between 1998 and 2003. Earlier professional experiences include software engineering internship at PointCloud on 3D reconstruction, tech support at Sleepless Software, and programming at Pacific HiTech. At Gettysburg College, she teaches Introduction to Computing, Introduction to Computer Science I, Data Structures, Computer Graphics, Operating Systems, Fundamentals of Database Systems, User Interfaces Design and Implementation, and Senior Capstone.

Kim's research interests encompass computer graphics, visualization, perception, and user interface design. Her publications appear in leading venues including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, and Proceedings of EuroGraphics. Key works include "Weaving vs. Blending: A Quantitative Assessment of the Information Carrying Capacities of Two Alternative Methods for Conveying Multivariate Data with Color" (Haleh Hagh-Shenas, Sunghee Kim, Victoria Interrante, Christopher Healey; IEEE TVCG, 2007); "Conveying Shape with Texture: experimental investigations of the texture's effects on shape categorization judgments" (Sunghee Kim, Haleh Hagh-Shenas, Victoria Interrante; IEEE TVCG, 2004); "Incorporating Visualization Research in Introductory Programming Course" (Sunghee Kim; EuroGraphics, 2018); "Evaluation of Korean Text Entry Methods for Smartwatches" (Ivaylo Ilinkin, Sunghee Kim; ACM CHI, 2017); "Design and Evaluation of Korean Text Entry Methods for Mobile Phones, a User Study" (Ivaylo Ilinkin, Sunghee Kim; ACM CHI, 2010); and "Conveying Shape with Displacement Texture" (Sunghee Kim, Haleh Hagh-Shenas, Victoria Interrante; ACM SIGGRAPH APGV, 2004). Additional contributions cover texture synthesis for 3D shape representation and multivariate visualization user studies.
