About Sunita

Professor Sunita Jogarajan is a Professor at Melbourne Law School in the Law faculty at the University of Melbourne. She holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, a Master's (coursework) from the University of New South Wales, and a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Sydney. Before entering academia, she worked at a Big 4 tax practice focusing on corporate tax and tax policy. Her research specializations encompass Australian and international tax law, with a specific interest in pre-World War II international tax history. She has served as a visiting fellow at the Université catholique de Louvain's Louvain Global College of Law and at the Max Planck Institute via the Hugh Ault Fellowship. Currently, she is Director of Studies for Tax and a member of the University's College of Reviewers for peer-review of teaching. Previous appointments include Associate Dean (Undergraduate), Co-Director of Studies for Tax and International Tax, Co-Director of the Tax Group, and member of the Teaching and Learning Quality Assurance Committee.

Professor Jogarajan teaches Australian taxation law to non-law undergraduate students and legal research in tax to Juris Doctor students. She previously taught Corporate Tax to Master of Laws and JD students and Legal Method and Reasoning to JD students. She played a key role in establishing the Melbourne Law School Tax Clinic, which provides free tax assistance to unrepresented taxpayers. Her major publications include the book Double Taxation and the League of Nations (Cambridge University Press, 2018), shortlisted for the 2019 Frans Vanistendael Award, and co-authorship of Principles of Taxation Law (Thomson Reuters). She has published articles in the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, British Tax Review, and World Tax Journal. Professor Jogarajan received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for her innovative teaching of taxation law to diverse cohorts. She contributes regularly to the biennial Cambridge Tax History Conference, is affiliated with the Melbourne Centre for Commercial Law, and is a member of the Taxation Institute of Australia, International Fiscal Association, and Australasian Tax Teachers Association.
