Professor Susan Goodwin is Professor of Policy Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work. She earned a BA (Hons) from the Australian National University and a PhD from the University of Sydney. Her research centers on social policy, gender, and social change. Professor Goodwin leads collaborative research projects with government and community partners and serves as the Research Theme Leader for Communities and Change in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She contributes to the Sydney Policy Lab and is part of the research team for the CARE program, Championing Australia's Relational Economy, alongside Professor Marc Stears and others.
Professor Goodwin has produced significant publications in policy studies and related fields. Key works include the co-edited volume Higher Education, Pedagogy and Social Justice: Towards Greater Equity in Higher Education Learning and Teaching (Springer, 2019, with Helen Proctor), Poststructural Policy Analysis: A Guide to Practice (Palgrave Macmillan), Markets, Rights and Power in Australian Social Policy (Sydney University Press, 2007, with Kristen Mooney), and the edited collection The Good Mother: Contemporary Motherhoods in Australia (Sydney University Press, 2010, with Kate Huppatz). Other notable contributions are the chapter Women, Policy and Politics: Recasting Policy Studies in Engaging with Carol Bacchi (2012), and the article Analysing Policy as Discourse: Methodological Advances in Policy Analysis (2011). Recent publications include Participatory Politics and Education Policy Reform: Publics and Histories (Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, 2024, with Jessica Gerrard and Helen Proctor). She received the University of Sydney Thompson Fellowship in 2010 and a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research Higher Degree Supervision as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work. Professor Goodwin holds editorial roles and participates in academic committees, enhancing policy studies discourse.
