Susanne Toney, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor and Endowed Chairperson of the Center for Entrepreneurship, Economics, Finance, and Accounting in the James T. George School of Business at Hampton University. As a proud Hampton University alumna, she earned her B.S. in Finance there, followed by an M.B.A. with dual concentrations in Finance and Decision Sciences from Clark Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Economics from Jackson State University. Her career spans academia and industry, including Assistant Professor positions in Economics at Hampton University’s Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and Savannah State University’s College of Business Administration, as well as roles at Fortune 500 companies like IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Wachovia, Toys "R" Us, and Hewlett-Packard.
Actively engaged in student mentorship, Dr. Toney advises Enactus, the Student Managed Investment Fund, the Real Estate Club, and serves as Faculty Liaison to the Student Government Association. She holds fellowships as a Duke University Diversity Initiative for Tenure in Economics (DITE) Fellow and Sam Walton Fellow, and memberships in Omicron Delta Epsilon, Beta Gamma Sigma, the American Economic Association, National Economics Association, and the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession. Dr. Toney’s research focuses on entrepreneurship, urban economics, migration, quality of life, and economic education. She has obtained grants from the National Science Foundation and Department of Education, presented at conferences, and published in peer-reviewed journals, notably “The African-American Economic Plan: A Formula for Turning Income into Wealth” (2010, with Janelle Davenport) in the Journal of Business and Finance Research. Her 2020 endowed chair acknowledges her leadership in fostering research collaborations and securing funding, enhancing Hampton University’s academic impact. Additionally, she serves on boards for the World Affairs Council of Hampton Roads and the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast.
