Svafa Grönfeldt is a Professor of the Practice at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), serving in the Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) and the School of Architecture and Planning. She is a founding member and faculty director of MITdesignX, an innovation accelerator focused on the design and development of new ventures created at MIT. Grönfeldt holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, where her research examined the impact of customer-oriented behaviors and service design on business outcomes. Her work emphasizes organizational design for high-growth companies, venture design, and applying a design lens concerned with human needs to solve complex problems. She collaborates with global teams in industry and academia to develop companies, brands, experiences, academic programs, processes, and structures that enhance business results and workplace wellbeing. As a venture designer, she integrates design innovation and entrepreneurship theory and methods to foster dynamic relationships between people and their environments.
Prior to MIT, Grönfeldt was president of Reykjavik University and co-founder of The MET Fund, a Cambridge-based seed investment fund. She has served on the boards of directors of three publicly listed companies on NASDAQ OMX and the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. She contributed to entrepreneurial teams that created and scaled two global life science companies. At MIT, she leads professional education programs including the Blended Professional Certificate: Chief Product Officer, Professional Certificate Program in Product Management, and Designing Scalable Solutions: Driving High-Impact Innovation. Grönfeldt is the author of Designing the X, published by MIT Press, which advances design-based entrepreneurship. Her career has shaped academic programs and practices in design innovation, influencing venture creation and human-centered problem-solving in entrepreneurship ecosystems.
