Dr. Swapan Swapan, also known as Abu Yousuf Swapan, is a Casual Academic in the School of Design and the Built Environment at Curtin University, where he has been a faculty member for the past six years. Prior to this, he held the position of Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Architecture at Premier University in Chittagong, Bangladesh, from January 2009 to January 2015. His academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy from Curtin University, completed around 2018 as a researcher at the Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) Institute, a Master of Architecture from the Dessau Institute of Architecture, Anhalt University in Germany, and a Bachelor of Architecture.
Swapan's research specializations and academic interests focus on sustainable urban design and community building, including sustainable built forms, urban regeneration, sense of place, sense of community, physical distances in residential neighborhoods, front yard accessibility, human behaviour and movement patterns, and microclimatic concerns for sustainability. His studies often utilize case studies from Subiaco, Western Australia, to examine social sustainability in urban environments. Key publications include 'Importance of the Residential Front Yard For Social Sustainability: Comparing Sense of Community Levels in Semi-private-public Open Spaces' (Journal of Green Building, 2019); 'Understanding Sense of Community in Subiaco, Western Australia: A Study of Human Behaviour and Movement Patterns' (2018); 'Built Form and Community Building in Residential Neighbourhoods: A Case Study of Physical Distance in Subiaco, Western Australia' (2018); 'Understanding the Importance of Front Yard Accessibility for Community Building: A Case Study of Subiaco, Western Australia' (Urban Science, 2018); 'Holistic Strategy for Urban Design: A Microclimatic Concern to Sustainability' (2017); the book 'URBAN DESIGN Transforming Spaces' (2014); and the conference paper ''Third Place'-an Urban Regeneration Strategy' (2013). His publications have accumulated 51 citations and over 15,000 reads on ResearchGate. Collaborations include work with Dora Marinova and Joo Hwa Bay.
