Dr. Syed Muzahir Abbas serves as an Adjunct Fellow in the School of Engineering within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in electrical (telecommunication) engineering from the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2006; his M.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the Center for Advanced Studies in Engineering, Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2009; and his Ph.D. degree in electronics engineering from Macquarie University, North Ryde, N.S.W., Australia, in 2016. His professional career encompasses roles as Transmission Engineer at Alcatel-Lucent in Pakistan, RF Engineer at CommScope in Australia, Senior Antenna Design Engineer and Senior Principal Engineer at Benelec Technologies in Australia, and currently Lead Antenna Design Engineer at GME Pty Ltd in Sydney, Australia. Abbas has lectured courses at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Western Sydney University, Macquarie University, and University of Sydney. He has also been a visiting researcher at the ElectroScience Laboratory, Ohio State University, USA, and Queen Mary University of London, UK.
Abbas's research interests focus on base station antennas, 5G antennas, mmWave antennas, 3D printed technology, metamaterials and metasurfaces, high impedance surfaces, frequency selective surfaces, electromagnetic bandgap structures, artificial magnetic conductors, beam steering, UWB and multiband antennas, flexible and embroidered antennas, carbon nanotube yarns and graphene-based antennas, reconfigurable antennas and electronics, RFID, sensors, and antennas for UHF, VHF, and WBAN applications. He is co-author of more than 150 research publications and co-inventor on approximately 20 patent applications, with his work garnering over 2,492 citations on Google Scholar. Notable publications include "A 28 GHz broadband helical inspired end-fire antenna and its MIMO configuration for 5G pattern diversity applications" (Electronics, 2021; 129 citations), "A simple ultra wideband printed monopole antenna with high band rejection and wide radiation patterns" (IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, 2014; 97 citations), "Design and characterization of wideband printed antenna based on DGS for 28 GHz 5G applications" (Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science, 2021; 66 citations), and "Uni-planar MIMO antenna for sub-6 GHz 5G mobile phone applications" (Applied Sciences, 2022; 63 citations). His accolades include the 2020 IEEE 5G World Forum Best Paper Award, 2019 IEEE NSW Outstanding Young Professional Award, 2018 Young Scientist Award from URSI Commission B, 2013 CSIRO Postgraduate Fellowship, 2012 iMQRES Award for Ph.D., and Research Productivity Awards from CIIT in 2012 and 2010. Abbas holds Senior Member status in IEEE and serves in leadership roles such as 2025 YP Ambassador for the IEEE EMC Society, 2025 IEEE MTT-S Outstanding YP Lecturer, and IEEE NSW Section Webmaster.
