About Serhat
Dr Serhat Yilmaz is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Law in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. He holds a law degree from Istanbul University, an LLM from the University of London SOAS, a Graduate Diploma in Law and Legal Practice Course from the University of Law, and a PhD in Law from the University of Westminster. His research specializations focus on sports agents and the protection of young athletes in sport. Yilmaz serves as programme director of the Professional Certificate Programme for Sports Agents. He previously worked as an associate lecturer at the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre at Birkbeck University of London and remains an academic member of the Centre for Society, Law and Popular Culture at Westminster Law School. His key publications include Children’s rights and the regulations on the transfer of young players in football published in 2018, Protection of minors Lessons about the FIFA RSTP from the recent Spanish cases at the Court of Arbitration for Sport published in 2018, and Rights Risks and Responsibilities in the Recruitment of Children within the Global Football Industry published in 2019. He has also contributed to reports such as Children before players Current risks and future research agendas for UNICEF in 2020. Yilmaz lectures on undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Foundations of Sports Law, Sport Integrity, and Sport Policy Governance and Law. His research has received funding from the Higher Education Innovation Fund and UNICEF UK. He has supervised PhD students on topics such as sport as a state soft power strategy and compliance with the World Anti Doping Code. Yilmaz has presented at international conferences including the Sport and EU Annual Conference and sessions at the European Parliament on child trafficking in sport. He reviews for journals including The International Sports Law Journal and International Review for the Sociology of Sport.
