Dr Tahneal Hawke is Senior Research Associate in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales. She is a researcher at the Centre for Ecosystem Science, working as part of the Platypus Conservation Initiative. Her research focuses on improving the conservation management of platypuses through research, monitoring, and education to increase awareness.
Dr Hawke has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications on platypus ecology and conservation, including studies on reintroduction survival and establishment dynamics in the Royal National Park (2026), field anaesthesia methods (2025), habitat suitability using LiDAR (2025), translocations during drought (2024), river regulation impacts (2024 and 2021), DNA metabarcoding for diet analysis (2022), and historical population changes (2019). Her work addresses topics such as platypus movements, activity patterns, microbiome, parasites, and responses to environmental stressors including drought, fire, and dams.
A new UNSW study reveals platypuses thriving and breeding after reintroduction to Royal National Park, Australia's oldest. High survival rates and juveniles signal conservation success led by university experts.
