Professor Tak-Wah Lam is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong, where he also serves as Deputy Director of the School of Computing and Data Science. He graduated with a BSc in Computer Science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1984 and received his MS and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 1988. He has been with the University of Hong Kong since then and previously served as associate dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2001 to 2006. His research focuses on the design and analysis of algorithms, with work spanning compressed text indexing, computational biology, and scheduling. He has supervised fourteen doctoral students, several of whom have pursued academic careers. Professor Lam has collaborated with genomics industry partners on bioinformatics software tools, including the SOAP series of short-read aligners and MEGAHIT for metagenomics assembly. He has received multiple teaching awards from the department and faculty, as well as an outstanding supervisor award from the university.
