Tamara D’Anjou Turner is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services within the College of Education & Human Development at Georgia State University. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Columbia University, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Miami in 2008, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Georgia. Before joining Georgia State University, Dr. Turner served as Director of the Counseling Center at Georgia Gwinnett College, where she secured a SAMHSA Grant for Suicide Prevention. She also maintains a private practice with clinical interests encompassing depression, anxiety, social phobia, trauma, women’s issues, motivation, stress management, assertiveness skills, and goal setting. These experiences have equipped her with extensive expertise in clinical training and mental health service delivery.
At Georgia State University, Dr. Turner acts as the practicum coordinator for the Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program, specializing in exposure and response prevention, motivational interviewing, and psychological assessment. She further contributes as a Supervising Psychologist at the GSU Psychology Clinic, supporting advanced clinical training and supervision. Her scholarly contributions include authorship of a chapter on individual counseling in the Handbook on Counseling African-American Women. Through these roles and her prior leadership in college counseling centers, Dr. Turner plays a key part in preparing future counseling psychologists, emphasizing evidence-based practices for diverse populations facing mental health challenges such as anxiety disorders, trauma recovery, and motivational enhancement.
