Tania Maxwell Clements is the Coordinator of Strings and Director of Campus Orchestra at the Georgia State University School of Music. She also serves as Principal Senior Lecturer in Viola, Violin, and Music Survey, and String Area Coordinator. Clements earned her BA in Music Performance (Viola) and Certificate of Post-Graduate Studies (Viola Performance) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying viola with James Durrant. There, she received the prestigious Watson Forbes Prize for Viola Playing and the Viola Challenge Prize.
During her studies at the International Menuhin Music Academy, she performed intensively with renowned artists including Yehudi Menuhin, Igor Oistrakh, and Donald McInnes, and acted as principal viola and soloist with the Camerata Lysy, appearing at festivals across Europe. Her extensive orchestral career in the UK includes positions as Associate Principal Viola with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal Viola with the Northern Symphony Orchestra, and guest principal with the Halle Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed with ensembles such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, East of England Orchestra, and Royal Festival Orchestra, at venues like Covent Garden, the Royal Albert Hall, La Scala Milan, Musikverein Vienna, and Prague’s Dvorak Hall. Since moving to Atlanta in 1998, Clements has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Savannah Philharmonic, Columbus Symphony, Macon Symphony, and chamber groups including Atlanta Chamber Players, Kopec String Quartet, Lyra String Quartet, and Vega Quartet. She has contributed to over one hundred CDs covering orchestral, solo, and chamber repertoire, and recorded with artists such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, and Natalie Cole. A strong supporter of new music for viola, she has commissioned many new works. Previously, she taught at Chethams School of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, and the Junior Department of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2025, she received the Atlanta Federation of Musicians Educator Award for excellence in music education and community contributions.
