Tanyia Wilkins Miller is a Lecturer in the Linguistics section of the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, and her Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge. Her academic interests and research specializations encompass the interaction of Jamaican English and Jamaican Creole phonologies, phonological and literacy development in children, and the developing phonology or phonologies of school-age Jamaican children. As an educator, she teaches foundational and advanced courses in linguistics, including LING1001 Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology, LING3001 Advanced Phonology, LING6007 Phonetics and Phonology for Graduate Students, and LING6024 Theoretical Approaches to the Study of Phonology. These courses cover topics in phonetics, phonology, and theoretical approaches relevant to language studies in the Caribbean context.
Tanyia Wilkins Miller contributes to the field of linguistics through active participation in international conferences and committees. She presented "Sociolinguistic influence on Phonological Development in Jamaican Children" (19 slides) at the virtual Winter Meeting of the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics on January 13, 2023. Additionally, she delivered "Phonological Development in Jamaican Children: Navigating a Linguistically Complex Environment" (24 slides) at the Summer Meeting of the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, June 26-29, 2023. Other presentations include "Phonology in the Jamaican Classroom" at the Society for Caribbean Linguistics conference in 2022 and an upcoming paper titled "The impact of language prestige on phonological confidence in Jamaican children" at the 8th Conference of the International Society for the Linguistics of English in 2025. She serves as a member of the UWI Regional Linguistics Academic Sub-Committee and is part of the Local Organising Committee for the Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics Summer Conference hosted at UWI Mona in 2025. Miller has also engaged in professional development on academic integrity and the implications of artificial intelligence in academia.
