About Tarun Kumar

Professor Tarun Kumar Naiya is a Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. He earned his PhD from the University of Calcutta in 2010, M.Tech. from Calcutta University in 2003, B.Tech. from the University of Calcutta in 2000, and B.Sc. from Bangabasi College in 1997. His professional career at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad commenced in 2010 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, where he advanced to Associate Professor in 2019 and was promoted to Professor in 2025. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in advancing research and education in petroleum production operations.

Prof. Naiya's research specializes in flow assurance, addressing critical challenges such as wax deposition, scale remediation, corrosion inhibition, demulsification of crude oil emulsions, and development of eco-friendly additives for enhanced oil recovery and pipeline transportation. His expertise spans petroleum production engineering, drilling fluids, wastewater management, and green chemical solutions derived from natural sources like agricultural waste and plant extracts. He has published 45 journal articles, 2 book chapters, 5 conference proceedings, and 3 reviews from 2008 to 2026, achieving 3,975 citations and an h-index of 19. Notable publications include "Demulsification of water-in-crude oil field emulsion using green demulsifier based on Sesamum indicum: synthesis, characterization, performance, and mechanism" (SPE Journal, 2024), "Enhancement of cold flowability of waxy crude oil using eco-friendly PPDs synthesized from stearic acid and lauric acid–Experimental, modelling, and mechanistic approach" (Journal of Molecular Liquids, 2025), "Performance Evaluation of Eco-Friendly PPDs Synthesized from Natural Sources for Enhancing the Cold Flow Behavior of Waxy Crude Oil" (SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, 2025), and a highly cited work on adsorption in Chemical Engineering Journal (2008). His achievements are recognized with awards such as the Distinguished Achievement Award for Petroleum Engineering Faculty from SPE International (2021), ONGC Award for Excellence in Design and Development of Oil/Gas Related Process Plant from IIChE (2020), Outstanding Scientist Award from Venus International Research Foundation (2018), and Vical Award from IIChE (2006). Prof. Naiya leads funded projects from SERB and industry on tailor-made surfactants and flow assurance technologies, influencing sustainable practices in the petroleum sector.
