Te Taka Keegan is a Professor in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Waikato. He was appointed as a full professor in November 2025 and is recognised as the first Māori Professor of Computer Science at the university. Keegan holds a Diploma in Computer Engineering from CIT Wellington, awarded in 1987. Prior to returning to academia, he worked for six years as a hardware engineer with Datacom and Digital.
His research focuses on the development of language technologies to support te reo Māori, including work on machine translation, digital libraries, and AI applications for Māori language communities. Keegan has held roles such as Associate Dean Māori for the Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science and Co-Director of the AI Institute Māori at the University of Waikato. He has contributed to publications on topics including indigenous language usage in digital contexts and analysis of te reo Māori in social media. Keegan received a Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award and has delivered public lectures on Māori language and computing, such as 'Reo Māori me te Ao Rorohiko'.
