Dr. Thangarajah Thiagu is a Lecturer (Education Focused) in the Malaysia School of Business at Monash University Malaysia. He earned a PhD in Finance from Multimedia University in 2014, with a thesis titled 'Exploring Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) Investment Strategy in Malaysia.' He previously obtained a Master in Philosophy from the same university in 2004, entitled 'A study of CRM in Malaysian Commercial Banks and its implications for the Small and Medium Enterprises.' Thiagu graduated with an honours Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Malaya in 1989. He joined Monash University in 2010 after serving at several academic institutions in the Klang Valley, accumulating extensive teaching experience in business statistics, business analytics, and economics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Thiagu's research interests encompass executive compensation, remuneration committees, housing affordability, rental discrimination, and housing indices. He served as Chief Investigator for the project 'Measuring Housing Affordability in Malaysia Using A Lifetime Income Measure' from 2014 to 2018 and 'Constructing Rental Housing Indices for the Malaysian Housing Market: Is Renting An Affordable Option for Malaysian Households?' from 2019 to 2022. His key publications include 'Measuring long-run housing affordability for Malaysian millennial households: a geospatial and income distribution analysis' (2024, International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis), 'Executive compensation, ownership structure and dividend payout: Evidence from Malaysia' (2020, Asian Academy of Management Journal of Accounting and Finance), 'Price Discovery in Agricultural Markets' (2020, American Business Review), 'A micro-level view of housing affordability in Malaysia using an age cohort-housing type analysis' (2019, Malaysian Journal of Economic Studies), and 'Measuring Malaysian housing affordability: the lifetime income approach' (2019, International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis). He teaches units including ETW1000 Business and Economic Statistics, ETW1102 Business Statistics, ETW1001 Introduction to Statistical Analytics, and ETM5900 Business Statistics. Thiagu contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals such as SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.
