Thomas Chermack is Professor and Chair of the Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change Ph.D. program in the School of Education at Colorado State University. He serves as Founder and Director of the Scenario Planning Institute and teaches courses on scenario planning, human expertise, analysis in organizations, change management, and organization development. Chermack's research centers on the theoretical foundations and outcomes of scenario planning, strategic learning, human expertise, change management, organizational learning, performance improvement, and theory building in applied disciplines. His work demonstrates the benefits of scenario planning, earning several awards for research excellence. In 2023, he received recognition for 15 years of service in the School of Education.
Chermack is the author of key books including Scenario Planning in Organizations: How to Create, Use, and Assess Scenarios (2011), Theory Building in Applied Disciplines (2013), Foundations of Scenario Planning: The Story of Pierre Wack (2017), Using Scenarios: Scenario Planning for Improving Organizations (2022), and ANALYSIS: The Key to Improving Organization and Individual Performance (2024). His scholarly articles include A review of scenario planning literature (2001), Improving decision-making with scenario planning (2004), and Studying scenario planning: Theory, research suggestions, and hypotheses (2005), with over 4,000 total citations. Beyond academia, he founded Chermack Scenarios in 2001 to advise organizations on scenario planning for navigating uncertainty. Through the Scenario Planning Institute, he documents scenario planning practices, tracks research, and delivers national and international seminars and consultations, contributing significantly to strategic foresight and organizational resilience in the field.
