Dr. Thomas Doering is a Senior Lecturer in Health Sciences at CQUniversity's School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, where he holds the positions of Head of Course for Allied Health and Deputy Chair of the First Nations Success Strategies Committee. Accredited as an Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and Sports Scientist (ASpS2) by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), he draws on extensive professional experience in clinical allied health practice and as a strength and conditioning coach in sporting contexts. Doering completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science at the University of Tasmania, a Bachelor of Health Science (Honours), and a PhD at CQUniversity in 2016. His doctoral thesis examined recovery in masters athletes, with the primary study published as "Lower integrated muscle protein synthesis in masters compared to younger athletes" in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
Prior appointments include Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Bond University (2017-2018), Lecturer at Griffith University (2019), and Lecturer at CQUniversity (2020-2022) leading to his current Senior Lecturer role from 2023. Doering's research centers on applied sport sciences to enhance athlete performance and exercise physiology, specifically skeletal muscle adaptations to exercise, detraining, disuse, immobilization, and ageing, encompassing masters athletes, team sports, and endurance disciplines. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference abstracts, including "The effect of a caffeinated mouth-rinse on endurance cycling time-trial performance" (2014) and contributions to Clinical Sports Nutrition. His scholarship reflects 731 citations, partnerships with 26 institutes across 10 countries, supervision of PhD and honours students, invited national presentations, and international conference appearances. In education, he coordinates units in the Bachelor of Allied Health and teaches in the Exercise and Sport Science program. Doering serves on the Exercise and Sports Science Australia Publications Committee since 2019. In 2024, his team received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching for an innovative Allied Health fast-track program.
