Thomas Field, PhD, serves as Professor and Department Head in the Counseling and Adult and Higher Education academic unit within the College of Education at Oregon State University. He earned his PhD in Counseling and Supervision from James Madison University and holds credentials as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts, Licensed Professional Counselor in South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Oregon, National Certified Counselor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. Field has taught graduate-level counseling courses at Oregon State University since 2011, after serving as faculty at Boston University School of Medicine. With more than 15 years of direct clinical experience, he has counseled over 1,000 clients addressing mental health concerns and maintains a small private practice serving adolescents and adults.
Field's scholarship centers on the integration of neuroscience into counseling practice, substance use disorders, professional identity development, and social justice advocacy within the counseling profession. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and authored two books focused on neuroscience-informed counseling approaches. His contributions have garnered national acclaim, including the Counselor Educator of the Year award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2019. Field has obtained grant funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Oregon Department of Education to support counseling education and training initiatives. As a board-certified counselor and clinical supervisor through the National Board for Certified Counselors, he contributes to the standards revision committee of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. In 2025, Field was promoted to the rank of full Professor at Oregon State University.
