Thomas Smith, Ph.D., is an adjunct professor in the Department of Counseling at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Psychology, Center for Psychological Studies, where he has taught since 2014 across the Broward, Palm Beach, and Hillsborough County campuses. His courses include Substance Abuse Counseling, Case Conceptualization and Treatment Strategies, Introduction to Mental Health Counseling Techniques, Counseling Internship, and Counseling Practicum. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Counseling with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from Barry University in 2012, with a dissertation titled Navigating Life as a Gay Couple in a Long-term Relationship. He also holds dual Master of Science degrees in Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy from Barry University (1996) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a minor in Business Administration, from Worcester State College (1991).
Licensed as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC #9909), Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #2721), and Master’s Certified Addictions Professional (MCAP #5643) in Florida, Smith serves as a Qualified Supervisor for mental health counseling and marriage and family therapy. He is currently Director of Behavioral Health Services at Care Resource in Fort Lauderdale (since 2016), delivering mental health, couples, family, and substance abuse counseling to HIV/AIDS-affected clients, including LGBTQ+ populations. Prior roles at Care Resource include Lead Clinical Counselor (2015-2016), Clinical Counselor II (2010-2015), and Psychosocial Services Supervisor (2009-2010). Earlier, he worked as Organization Development Specialist in Human Resources at Mercy Hospital Miami (1999-2005), developing leadership and staff training programs, and as Senior Case Manager in Special Immunology Services (1996-1999). Smith is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and has completed advanced trainings in Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Levels I-III), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and transgender care certification. His clinical expertise encompasses crisis intervention, treatment planning, and quality management for diverse underserved communities.
