Challenges students to grow and excel.
Professor Thuy Do holds the position of Professor of Molecular Microbiology in the School of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Leeds, where she also serves as Director of Postgraduate Research Studies and Module Lead. Her academic journey began with a degree in Biochemistry from the Université of Strasbourg, France in 1998, followed by a BSc (Hons 2ii) in Food Science and Nutrition in 1999 and an MSc in Analytical Chemistry in 2000, both from Teesside University, UK. She earned her PhD in Bioprocess Development from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2004. From 2004 to 2012, she was a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Microbiology at King’s College London, Dental Institute, Guy’s Hospital. She joined the University of Leeds in 2012 as a Lecturer in Microbiology, advancing to her current professorial role.
Professor Do's research specializations include bacteriology, microbial culturing methods, oral biofilms, microbiomes, next generation sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics. She investigates the phylogenetic diversity of the oral microbiota and its associations with infectious diseases, functional biology of oral biofilms, mechanisms of dysbiosis, host-microbiome interactions, and differential gene expression in biological samples. Key publications include "Periodontal Disease and Bacteria in Anti-CCP Antibody–Positive At-Rheumatoid Arthritis and Healthy Adults" (JAMA Network Open, 2019), "Actinomyces spp. gene expression in root caries lesions" (Journal of Oral Microbiology, 2016), "Dysbiosis in the oral microbiomes of anti-CCP positive rheumatoid arthritis subjects" (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, 2021), and co-editing the book "Oral Microbiome" (Springer, 2024). With over 3,900 citations on Google Scholar, her work has significantly impacted the field of oral microbiology. She has served as Associate Editor for Oral Diseases (2018–2022), the Journal of Medical Microbiology, Frontiers in Oral Health (Oral Infections and Microbes), and others, and as a member of the IADR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators Committee (2019–2022) and the IADR Science Information Committee (2021–2024).
