Dr. Tiffany R. Hayden serves as Associate Professor of Chemistry at Erskine College, having joined the faculty in 2009. She grew up in Texas and earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. After completing her bachelor's degree, she conducted research for Bayer Pharmaceuticals on cancer, obesity, and arthritis. She then pursued graduate studies, obtaining an M.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from Baylor University. At Erskine College, Hayden teaches organic chemistry, biochemistry, and non-major chemistry classes. She advises pre-medical students in the Chemistry major, serves as the faculty advisor for the student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), and works as an MCAT instructor and tutor for the Princeton Review.
Hayden's research specializations include the synthesis and properties of ionic liquids and chemical education, particularly the use of pre-lab videos for organic chemistry laboratories. Her scholarly contributions feature the conference paper 'Investigations of IL-Supported Hypervalent Iodine Compounds' from 2009. In 2017, she received the SCICU Excellence in Teaching Award. Hayden also serves as an ACS Science Coach, partnering with local K-12 teachers to bring science into classrooms. She holds memberships in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), American Chemical Society (ACS) including its Organic Chemistry and Chemical Education Divisions, Western Carolinas Local Section of ACS (WCACS), and American Association of University Women (AAUW) as Erskine College faculty representative.
