Timothy Redl serves as Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Houston-Downtown. He received his Ph.D. in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Rice University in 2004, with a dissertation titled 'A Study of University Timetabling that Blends Graph Coloring with the Satisfaction of Various Essential and Preferential Conditions,' advised by Dr. Nathaniel Dean and Dr. Richard Tapia. He also holds an M.A. in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Rice University in 2003 and an A.B. in Mathematics, cum laude, with a minor in Operations Research from Dartmouth College in 1997.
Redl joined the University of Houston-Downtown in Fall 2005 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, advancing to Associate Professor in Fall 2011 and Professor in Fall 2020. He served as Faculty Teaching Fellow in the College of Sciences and Technology from Fall 2021 to Summer 2023 and became Department Chair in Fall 2024. Prior roles include Lecturer at Rice University (2001, 2004-2005) and Adjunct Instructor at Lone Star College-CyFair (2004-2006). His publications in Mathematics include 'Taking Advantage of Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics for College Admission: A Study of High School Students in the Houston Area' (Princeton Journal of Interdisciplinary Research, 2025, with T. Duong), 'Early Field Experiences for STEM Undergraduates: A Possible Pathway into Teaching' (Journal of STEM Teacher Education, 2021, with J. Quander), 'Coloring Integral Distance Graphs with Finite Distance Sets' (Congressus Numerantium, 2010), 'University Timetabling via Graph Coloring: An Alternative Approach' (Congressus Numerantium, 2007), and 'On the Enumeration of a Class of Non-Graceful Graphs' (Congressus Numerantium, 2006, with A. Drake). Redl received the University of Houston-Downtown Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, was a finalist in 2010 and nominated in 2009, and earned the Advanced Certificate in Effective College Instruction from ACUE and ACE in 2023, along with multiple micro-credentials in teaching and online instruction.
