Associate Professor Toan Phung is a faculty member in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales. He serves as an Associate Professor in Energy Systems and directs the High Voltage Laboratory. His research focuses on high voltage engineering, including high voltage generation, measurement, and testing; dielectric and electrical insulation materials, encompassing their electrical properties, ageing mechanisms, and diagnostic methods; partial discharge phenomena, covering detection, measurement, characterisation, and recognition; power system equipment such as generators, motors, transformers, cables, transmission lines, and switchgear; condition monitoring of substation and power system equipment along with smart sensors and sensing systems; electromagnetic transients in power systems and lightning; and the application of machine learning and signal processing techniques in condition monitoring.

Phung holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He maintains an active research profile with numerous publications, including over 130 journal articles and more than 250 conference papers, along with several book chapters. His work contributes to advancements in insulation condition monitoring and related areas within electrical engineering.
