Dr. Tony A. Barringer serves as Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Faculty Affairs in the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He earned his B.S. in Criminal Justice and M.S. in Public Administration from Southeast Missouri State University, and his Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University. Prior to joining FGCU in 1997, Dr. Barringer taught at the College of Lake County and Southeast Missouri State University, bringing over twenty years of practical experience in criminal justice and nearly as many in higher education. Throughout his nearly three decades at FGCU, he has held key leadership positions including Interim Provost, Interim Dean, Associate Dean, and Division Chair.
In his current role, Dr. Barringer assists with the faculty promotion process, coordinates annual faculty promotion workshops, serves as a liaison with campus promotion committees, helps organize new faculty orientation, manages the sabbatical review process, handles grievances within Academic Affairs, prepares responses to memoranda of understanding, supports performance improvement plans across colleges, oversees updates to the electronic faculty resource guide, represents FGCU on university committees and central administration projects, and acts as liaison to the FGCU bargaining team. His research specializations center on criminal justice, particularly minorities’ experiences within the criminal justice system, juvenile justice, and wraparound services. Dr. Barringer has presented nationally and internationally, served as a consultant to the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice, and was a guest discussant at the Florida Department of Corrections’ Re-entry Summit. As Principal or Co-Principal Investigator, he has secured approximately $1 million in funded state and federal grants focused on juvenile justice and wraparound services. He has published widely on minorities’ experiences with the criminal justice system, contributing to the academic discourse in these areas. Dr. Barringer maintains affiliations across FGCU’s colleges, including the Lutgert College of Business, supporting the university’s broad academic mission.
