About Tony

Professor Tony Butler is a Professor in the School of Population Health at the University of New South Wales in the Faculty of Medicine & Health. Since completing his PhD in the epidemiology of prisoner health, he has conducted numerous studies examining the health of adult and juvenile offenders. He has co-authored many peer-reviewed journal articles on the health of offenders. His areas of interest include mental illness, the role of traumatic brain injury in offending behaviour, blood-borne viral infections, smoking cessation, health surveillance, the development of health indicators for prisoners, sexual health, and violence including domestic violence. Professor Butler leads the Justice Health Research Program at UNSW and currently leads the NHMRC Australian Centre of Research Excellence in Offender Health. The program offers electives at UNSW including Public Health and Corrections and Inside the Criminal Mind.
