Rate My Professor Tracy Redhead

Tracy Redhead is a musician, composer, researcher, Chair of Contemporary Popular Music, and Senior Lecturer in Electronic Music and Sound Design at the University of Western Australia’s Conservatorium of Music. She holds a PhD in Music from the University of Newcastle, awarded in 2020, with the thesis titled Dynamic Music - The Implications of Interactive Technologies on Popular Music Making, and a Master of Arts (Research) in Music from Queensland University of Technology, awarded in 2015, titled Interactive Music - Will Audiences Interact? Her research interests include dynamic music production, music composition, dynamic music composition, interactive music, music technology, and music exports. Redhead explores the impact of interactive technologies on music-making, spanning the intersection of music, technology, and creativity, with a focus on developing dynamic music systems that adapt in real time. Her work draws connections between creative practice, artificial intelligence, video game composition, and audience engagement. As senior researcher for The Economic and Cultural Value of Australian Music Exports ARC Linkage project, she has performed at the Ars Electronica Festival in Austria and Music Tech Festival in Germany.

Key publications by Redhead include her book Interactive Technologies and Music Making: Transmutable Music, published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group in 2024, which provides a framework for musicians, composers, and producers to create transmutable music represented by data and transformed by interactive technologies such as VR and AR, including tutorials on sensors, data transformation using machine learning, and mapping to musical parameters. She co-authored chapters in The Music Export Business: Born Global (Routledge, 2021) with Stephen Chen, Shane Homan, and Richard Vella, including Introduction (pp. 1-25), Case study (pp. 114-139), and Born global (pp. 170-182). Among her 32 research outputs are additional chapters, recorded creative works such as Out of Control (2024), conference papers, performances, and software. Redhead received the Music Bricks award in 2015. Her innovative projects include the Semantic Machine app from the UK EPSRC-funded FAST project, and she delivered a TEDx talk in 2024. Through these contributions, she advances new forms of creative expression at the forefront of music and technology.
