Tushar Bharati is a Senior Lecturer in the Economics discipline at the University of Western Australia Business School. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Southern California in 2018, an MA in Economics from the same institution in 2014, an MA in Economics from the University of Delhi in 2011, and a BA in Economics from the University of Delhi in 2009. His research centers on the economics of human capital, migration, and trade, with primary fields encompassing education, health, labour, and development economics, and secondary fields in migration and trade. Bharati's expertise aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, gender equality, decent work, and reduced inequalities. He actively supervises PhD students, with completions including Adnan Fakir in 2022 and Nauman Malik in 2024, and ongoing supervisions for multiple candidates expected between 2025 and 2029. His academic impact is evident through his role as a supervisor for honours, masters, and BPhil research placements, placing graduates in positions at Treasury, Deloitte, Bain & Partners, and government departments.
Bharati has authored publications in prestigious journals, including 'Gender differences in preferences for flexible work hours: Experimental evidence from an online freelancing platform' in Labour Economics (2025), 'Learning disruptions and academic outcomes' in Economics of Education Review (2025), 'Recovery from an Early-Life Shock through Improved Access to Schools' in Journal of Human Capital (2025), 'Internal Migration and Labor Market Outcomes in Indonesia' in Economic Development and Cultural Change (2024), and 'Types of communications technology and civil conflict' in Journal of Development Economics (2024). He has secured significant grants, such as the ERIA grant for Employment Transition in Asia (AUD 12,000, 2024), IFPRI grant for Education and Intimate Partner Violence (USD 25,000, 2021), ADBI grant for Online Market Place and Women (USD 12,000, 2021), EXIM Bank BRICS Economic Research Award (USD 22,500, 2019), and PAFTAD Young Scholar Fellowship (2019). Bharati teaches Advanced Development Economics (ECON4408), Microeconomics: Policy and Applications (ECON2233), and The Economics of Public Policy. He has coordinated honours, Master of Economics, and Master of Public Policy programs from 2021 to 2023 and serves as Associate Editor for Foreign Trade Review since 2022. External roles include Research Affiliate at IZA Institute of Labor Economics since 2024.
