About Uenis

Uenis Tannuri is a physician who graduated from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) in 1970. After completing two years of residency in general surgery, he finished his third year of residency in pediatric surgery at the Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP. He earned a master's degree in 1977 with a dissertation on the implementation of prolonged parenteral nutrition in children with surgical conditions, followed by a doctorate in 1980 and a livre-docência in 1983, both focused on experimental parenteral nutrition.

Since standardizing nutritional support methods for children with surgical conditions, Tannuri advanced to experimental studies in fetal surgery aimed at preventing pulmonary hypoplasia associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. He has made significant contributions to esophageal surgery in children, particularly techniques for esophageal replacement. Beginning in 1986, he has focused extensively on pediatric liver transplantation, performing approximately 1,000 procedures from cadaveric or living donors, along with clinical and experimental research on surgical diseases in children, with emphasis on liver transplantation. In February 2009, he was appointed Full Professor of the Discipline of Pediatric Surgery and Liver Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics at FMUSP and became responsible for the Laboratory of Pediatric Surgery (LIM 30) at FMUSP. From 2018 until his retirement in February 2022, he served as President of the Board of Directors of the Instituto da Criança e do Adolescente at the Hospital das Clínicas da FMUSP. Following retirement, he continues teaching, clinical, and research activities as a physician affiliated with the Instituto da Criança through the Fundação Faculdade de Medicina. He has authored or co-authored over 200 publications in indexed journals.
