A role model for academic excellence.
Venkat Devarajan is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he served for over 41 years. Prior to joining UTA, he worked for more than a decade at LTV Missiles and Electronics, now Lockheed Martin. As Director of the Virtual Environment Laboratory, he provides expert guidance on image processing applications in aerospace and automated manufacturing. He served as chief architect of TOPSCENE, a pioneering photo-based visual system for US Navy pilots' air-to-ground mission training, which achieved wide acceptance across US military services and advanced digital photogrammetry technology. Devarajan's research focuses on digital signal and image processing, computer graphics, flight and surgical simulation, cartographic algorithms, and virtual reality in biomedical, aerospace, and manufacturing fields. His work on feature extraction from 2D CAD drawings to create 3D models led to founding Imagecom Inc., developing patented FlexiDesign technology for commercial and military markets. He has over 80 publications and presentations.
Devarajan chaired or served on over 75 dissertation and master's committees, funding students through his research grants, supporting their startups, and employing them. He developed courses in Telecommunications Networks, Probability and Signals, Digital Photogrammetry, and Engineering Entrepreneurship. His honors include College of Engineering Excellence in Research Award (2002), Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Excellence in Teaching Award (2003), UTA Graduate School Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring (2008), Professor of the Year by UTA IEEE Student Chapter (2012), Dean's Entrepreneurship Fellow (2023), and election as Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
