About Venkataraman

Venkataraman S serves as Associate Professor in the Strategic Management area and Associate Dean (Kochi Campus) at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. He earned his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, along with a PGDM from the same institution. He also holds a B.E. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, and was a Visiting Doctoral Scholar at the S.C. Johnson School of Business, Cornell University, USA. Before joining academia, he had a prominent career in the financial ratings and advisory sector. He served as Senior Director at CRISIL Ltd from 2007 to 2010, CEO and Chief Rating Officer at Caribbean Information & Credit Rating Services Ltd., Trinidad and Tobago from 2004 to 2007, Director at CRISIL Ratings from 2001 to 2004, Head of CRISIL Financial Sector Ratings from 2000 to 2001, and Head of CRISIL Advisory Services, Banking & Infrastructure from 1995 to 2000. Earlier, he was Group Leader, CRISIL Ratings from 1992 to 1995. He continues as Independent Director at The Caribbean Information & Credit Rating Services Ltd. since 2010. Other roles include Co-Chairman, Banking & Finance Committee at Bombay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (2002-2003 and 2003-2004), Member of the Expert sub-committee on Risk Management there (2003-2004), and Member of the Helpdesk Knowledge Map on MFI ratings constituted by the World Bank's Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (2004-2009).

His research specializations include corporate sustainability, influence of culture on strategy, entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship. Venkataraman S has received the Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Scholarship in 2014-15 for his visiting doctoral scholarship at Cornell University, the Strategic Management Society scholarship accompanying selection to the 2013 doctoral consortium, selection of his submission at the 2013 ISB-Ivey Case Competition for Ivey case publication, and 3rd Prize in the ISB Case Chase Competition 2012. He has led consulting assignments on sustainability practices, privatization options, internal credit rating systems, financial vulnerabilities, and business restructuring for corporations, governments, and United Nations agencies, and chaired the Corporate Risk Management Congress in Mumbai in 2011.
