About Venky

Venky Shankararaman is Vice Provost (Education) and Professor of Information Systems (Education) at the School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University. He holds a PhD from the University of Strathclyde awarded in 1992 and a Bachelor of Technology from Cochin University of Science and Technology awarded in 1987. Shankararaman joined SMU in 2005 and has held successive appointments including Practice Associate Professor of Information Systems, Associate Professor of Information Systems (Practice), Associate Professor of Information Systems (Education), and Professor of Information Systems (Education). His administrative roles at SMU include Associate Dean (Education), Deputy Dean (Practice & Education), Vice Provost (Undergraduate Matters), and his current position as Vice Provost (Education) since 2021.

Shankararaman’s research focuses on information systems education, technology-enhanced learning and pedagogy, analytics and decision support, and next-generation IT practices including digital transformation. He has received numerous awards including the Distinguished Education Award from SMU in 2023, the Public Administration Medal (Silver) from the Singapore Government in 2023, the SMU-X Excellent Teacher Award in 2018, the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2017, the Outstanding Contribution to IS Education award from the Association of Information Systems in 2014, and the SAP Outstanding Academic Award for Southeast Asia in 2014. Key publications include the book Business Process Engineering Methodology (2006) and journal articles such as “Making virtual project-based learning work during the COVID-19 pandemic” (2022) and “Rapid Transition of a Technical Course from Face-to-Face to Online” (2021). He serves as President of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education and has held leadership positions in the Association of Information Systems Special Interest Group on Education.
