About Vicky

Dr Vicky Comino serves as a Senior Lecturer in the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland. She earned her BA, LLB (Hons), LLM, and PhD from the University of Queensland. Prior to her academic career, Dr Comino practiced as a solicitor at a top-tier law firm, specializing in corporate law, leasing, commercial and residential conveyancing, strata development, securities, and opinion work. She has contributed voluntarily to organizations including Legal Aid, South Brisbane Immigration & Community Legal Service, Women's Equal Opportunity (WEO), and the Justice and the Law Society (JATL) at UQ. Additionally, she has held positions on various committees, most notably as chair of the Queensland Law Society's accreditation committee for Business Law Specialists.

Dr Comino's research specializes in corporate law, with a particular emphasis on the regulation of corporate misconduct. Her seminal 2015 monograph, Australia's "Company Law Watchdog": ASIC and Corporate Regulation, critically analyzes the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's (ASIC) role and effectiveness in corporate oversight, especially amid high-profile scandals and inquiries such as the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry. Her work has been cited in the Final Report of the Banking Royal Commission and Australian Law Reform Commission reports on corporate criminal responsibility, establishing her as a leading Australian scholar in corporate regulation. Notable publications include "'Corporate Culture' is the 'New Black' – Its Possibilities and Limits as a Regulatory Mechanism for Corporations and Financial Institutions?" published in the University of New South Wales Law Journal in 2021; "The GFC and beyond – how do we deal with corporate misconduct?" in the Journal of Business Law in 2018; "James Hardie and the problems of the Australian civil penalties regime" in the University of New South Wales Law Journal in 2014; and "ASIC and civil penalties - 30 years on: Is it 'fit for purpose'?" in the Griffith Law Review in 2025. In 2018, she was awarded a Liberty Fellowship by the University of Leeds to conduct comparative research on corporate regulation in Australia and the UK. Dr Comino is a Fellow of the Australian Centre for Private Law at UQ and teaches courses in corporations law and the regulation of corporate misconduct.
