Vikram Krishnamurthy is a Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He holds graduate field appointments in Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and is affiliated with the Center for Applied Mathematics and the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His research interests encompass statistical signal processing, stochastic control including partially observed Markov decision processes, stochastic optimization, and inverse reinforcement learning. Applications include dynamics of social networks involving large language models and humans, adaptive sensing, cognitive radar systems, blockchain, and human-machine interfacing. Krishnamurthy leads the Cornell Statistical Signal Processing Laboratory, part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department and the Foundations of Information, Network, and Decision Systems research collaborative, which investigates mathematical foundations of machine learning, signal processing, optimization, control theory, and network science.
Krishnamurthy received his B.S. from the University of Auckland, earning the James Gordon Goodfellow memorial award as university medalist, completed one semester in electrical engineering at IIT Madras, and obtained his Ph.D. from the Australian National University in 1992, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship there. His career progressed at the University of Melbourne from 1994 to 2002, advancing from senior lecturer to Reader, full professor, and Deputy Head of Department. From 2002 to 2016, he served as Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of British Columbia. Since 2016, he has been at Cornell, supervising over 25 Ph.D. students who hold prominent positions in academia and industry. An IEEE Fellow since 2004, he was Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Signal Processing Society in 2009-2010, Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing from 2010-2012, technical chair of ICASSP 2013, and chair of the IEEE Signal Processing Theory and Methods Technical Committee. Additional honors include an Honorary Doctorate from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, in 2013, and the 2019 Jean Pierre LeCadre award from the International Society of Information Fusion for the best conference paper. He has delivered plenary talks at the IEEE Control and Decision Conference, International Conference on Information Fusion, GameNets, and IEEE Statistical Signal Processing Workshop. Krishnamurthy authored Partially Observed Markov Decision Processes: From Filtering to Controlled Sensing (Cambridge University Press, 2016), Dynamics of Engineered Artificial Membranes and Biosensors (Cambridge University Press, 2018), and the second edition of the former (2025).
