Associate Professor Vinh Bui serves in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. He earned a Master of Science (MSci) and a PhD from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Prior to academia, he spent more than 10 years in the IT industry as a network engineer and software developer, working on real-time embedded systems software development that demanded expertise in hardware, programming, and algorithm complexity. Entering higher education in 2005, he has held research and teaching positions at UNSW, Victoria University, Central Queensland University, and Southern Cross University. At SCU, he has developed, taught, and coordinated undergraduate and postgraduate IT programs, including over 30 subjects in computational thinking, fundamentals of programming, computer networking, cybersecurity, web development, and programming the Internet of Things. He actively supervises PhD and Master's students and is the course coordinator for the Bachelor of Information Technology and the Bachelor of Information Technology/Bachelor of Business.
Dr. Bui is an enthusiastic researcher whose work centers on applied computing, with applications of generative AI, machine learning, nature-inspired optimization algorithms, and big data analytics in healthcare, tourism, and waste management. He maintains a special interest in synthetic data and synthetic environments for training machine learning algorithms. He has produced over 30 peer-reviewed articles, including 'Revisiting Tourism Destination Image: A Holistic Measurement Framework Using Big Data' (2021), 'Virtual reality in training artificial intelligence-based systems: a case study of fall detection' (2022, Multimedia Tools and Applications), 'A Systematic Review of Digital Transformation Literature (2013-2021) and the development of an overarching apriori model to guide future research' (2022), and 'Document image quality assessment: A survey' (2023). His efforts have helped secure over 10 million dollars in research funding and support UN Sustainable Development Goals through involvement in clusters like Catchments, Coasts and Communities, and ZeroWaste. A certified Cisco instructor pursuing a postgraduate certificate in tertiary teaching, he holds professional memberships in the Australian Computer Society (ACS Certified Professional), IEEE, and IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. He engages in community activities such as Quick2VR, AI in Healthcare Symposium, and events by ACS, Study Gold Coast, GC-Hub, and Queensland AI-Hub.
