Dr Vinutha Shetty, MBBS, DCH, DNB, MD, FRACP, PhD, serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of Western Australia. She is a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Perth Children’s Hospital, where she leads the adolescent diabetes service within the Endocrinology Department. Additionally, she heads the exercise research theme at the Children’s Diabetes Centre and works as a researcher at The Kids Research Institute Australia. Her academic journey began with an MBBS from Mysore Medical College, India, followed by specialization in paediatrics, earning DNB and MD degrees from Lokamanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai, India. Early in her career, she held positions at Kasturba Medical College in India and New Medical Centre Hospital in Abu Dhabi. Relocating to Perth in 2007, she completed advanced training in paediatric endocrinology and pursued a PhD at the University of Western Australia, investigating carbohydrate requirements to maintain stable glycaemia during exercise in individuals with type 1 diabetes.
Dr Shetty’s research focuses on diabetes and exercise, with particular emphasis on preventing hypoglycaemia during physical activity in young people with type 1 diabetes. She coordinates clinical studies employing insulin clamp techniques to explore glucose dynamics. Her contributions have earned recognition through awards such as the Royal Australasian College of Physicians Trainee Research Award in 2013 and the Australian Paediatric Endocrine Group Young Investigator Award in 2014. Key publications include 'Effect of Exercise Intensity on Exogenous Glucose Requirements to Maintain Euglycemia During Exercise in Type 1 Diabetes' (Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2021), 'A Novel Mobile Health App to Educate and Empower Young People With Type 1 Diabetes to Exercise Safely: Prospective Single-Arm Mixed Methods Pilot Study' (JMIR Diabetes, 2021), 'Exercise Management for Young People With Type 1 Diabetes: A Structured Approach to the Exercise Consultation' (Frontiers in Endocrinology, 2019), and 'Development of a Novel Mobile Health App to Empower Young People With Type 1 Diabetes to Exercise Safely: Co-Design Approach' (JMIR Diabetes, 2024). She engages in integrative health efforts, including reducing the healthcare sector’s carbon footprint via the CAHS Earth Ambassadors Network.
