Vivian A. Fonseca, MD, FRCP, serves as Professor of Medicine, Assistant Dean for Clinical Research, the Tullis-Tulane Alumni Chair in Diabetes, and Chief of the Section of Endocrinology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned his M.B.B.S. from the Armed Forces Medical College in Poona, India, in 1974, and his M.D. from Bombay University in 1978. He obtained membership in the Royal College of Physicians (M.R.C.P., U.K.) in 1980 and fellowship (F.R.C.P.) in 2004. Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1993 and in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism in 1995, Dr. Fonseca's career spans training and positions in India, the United Kingdom—including senior registrar and consultant roles at Royal Free Hospital, London—and Saudi Arabia. In the United States, he progressed from Associate Professor to Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (1992-1998), Chief of the Division of Endocrinology at Texas A&M College of Medicine (1998-2009), and joined Tulane in 2009.
Dr. Fonseca's research interests center on the prevention and treatment of diabetic complications, cardiovascular risk factor reduction—especially inflammation and novel factors—and using technology to improve diabetes care in underprivileged populations. He has published nearly 500 papers and reviews, edited the textbook Clinical Diabetes: Translating Research into Practice (Elsevier), and participated in major trials including ACCORD and TINSAL-T2D. His impact includes leadership as Past President of the American Diabetes Association's Science and Medicine Section (2012), roles on ADA and AACE boards and guideline committees, and editorships as Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care (2007-2011) and Journal of Diabetes and its Complications (current). Key awards are the ADA Banting Medal for Leadership and Service (2012), Seale-Harris Award (2012), Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society election, Best Doctors in the USA listings, and top-10 global diabetes expert rankings by Expertscape. He directs Tulane's Clinical Trials Unit, Research Professional Development Core for the Masters in Clinical Research program, serves as Louisiana PI for the All of Us Program Southern Network, and Co-PI for REACHnet.
