Vladik Y. Kreinovich is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), a position he has held since 1997 after serving as Associate Professor from 1990 to 1997. His academic journey began in Russia, where he earned a B.Sc. in Computer Science and M.S. in Mathematics from St. Petersburg University in 1974 (summa cum laude), followed by a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics, Siberian Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk in 1979. He later obtained a Ph.D. in Computational Science from UTEP in 1993. Before joining UTEP, Kreinovich held research associate and senior research associate positions at institutions such as the National Research Institute for Electrical Measuring Instruments in St. Petersburg and the Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirsk. He has also served as adjunct professor at Chiang Mai University (2009–2019) and visiting professor/researcher at institutions including Leibniz University of Hannover, University of Ostrava, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok.
Kreinovich's research specializations encompass interval computations, fuzzy systems, soft computing, uncertainty quantification, decision making under uncertainty, intelligent control, computational science, bioinformatics, and cyber-share. At UTEP, he coordinates the Center for Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Research and co-maintains the Official Interval Computations website since 1995. His profound influence in these fields is demonstrated through extensive leadership and honors: President of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (2025–2029), Vice-President (2017–2023), President of North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (2012–2014), and various roles in IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society including Treasurer (2020–2022). He holds fellowships from IFSA (2017), Mexican Society for Artificial Intelligence (2017), Russian Association for Fuzzy Systems (2019), and is Doctor Honoris Causa from Ostrava University (2018), with the AT&T Fellowship in Information Technology (2021–2028). Kreinovich serves on editorial boards of the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems, Soft Computing, and others, and program committees for SCAN, EUSFLAT, IFSA, NAFIPS conferences. Awards include multiple Outstanding Paper Awards at NAFIPS (2022–2024), 2025 IEEE SMC Outstanding Contribution Award, 2015 SDPS Fay and Lotfi A. Zadeh Award, El Paso Energy Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for Research (2003), and Top Performer in Teaching and Research at UTEP (2001). Listed among the Top 2% Scientists (2020–2023), he has supervised numerous graduate theses.
