W. van der Valk is the NEVI Professor of Purchasing & Supply Chain Management (2020-2026) and Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management at Tilburg School of Economics and Management, Tilburg University, where she also serves as Interim Head of the department. She earned her PhD in Business Administration, specializing in organizational science, from Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, in 2007, and a Master’s degree from Eindhoven University of Technology in 2003. Her career includes roles as research assistant at Eindhoven University of Technology (2003), PhD candidate at Rotterdam School of Management (2003-2007), Assistant Professor of Purchasing and Supply Management at Eindhoven University of Technology (2007-2012), and progressive positions at Tilburg University since 2012: Assistant Professor (2012-2016), Tenured Assistant Professor (2016-2018), and Associate Professor (since 2018).
Van der Valk's research focuses on effective governance of inter-organizational relationships in supply chains and networks, emphasizing contractual and relational mechanisms amid digital transformation and circular economy transitions. Notable publications include 'Buying business services: towards a structured service purchasing process' (Journal of Services Marketing, 2009; 261 citations), 'Inter-organizational governance: a review, conceptualisation and extension' (Production Planning & Control, 2020; 256 citations), 'Managing information asymmetry in public–private relationships undergoing a digital transformation' (International Journal of Operations & Production Management, 2021; 251 citations), 'Down the drain: The dynamic interplay of governance adjustments addressing setbacks in large public-private projects' (Journal of Operations Management, 2024), and 'All along the asset life cycle: Research opportunities for operations and supply chain management' (Journal of Operations Management, 2024). She has supervised PhD theses on topics such as performance-based contracting and sustainable supply management. Van der Valk leads projects like NWO/NGinfra-funded VIA AUGUSTA and VIA PRUDENTI on infrastructure management. She serves as Editor for Journal of Supply Chain Management (2022-2025) and on editorial boards of Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management, and International Journal of Operations & Production Management.
