Rate My Professor Wahyu Nirbito

Prof. Dr. Ir. Wahyu Nirbito, MSME, is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universitas Indonesia in 1982, a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, USA, in 1986 (or 1987 per some records), and a Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universitas Indonesia in 2011. His teaching career began in 1985, and he continues to teach courses including Kinematics and Dynamics, Vibration Engineering, and Applied Mechanical Vibration. In 2021, he was appointed as a permanent professor (Guru Besar) at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia.

Prof. Nirbito’s research focuses on vibration engineering, gas turbines, and condition monitoring, with an emphasis on applicative solutions for industrial mechanical systems. His work includes vibration monitoring on gas turbine systems for natural gas pipelines, detection of defects in rolling element bearings using blind deconvolution methods, condition monitoring strategies for early damage detection in machine components via acoustic emission and wave propagation, and analyses of aircraft performance such as takeoff and landing on short, high-altitude runways as well as icing risks on wings. Additional projects address vibration responses in building foundations during earthquakes, design modifications for landing gear and brakes, and tools for monitoring human mass changes in microgravity environments. He has contributed to industrial research in oil and gas, aviation, and power generation sectors. In 2006, he received the Satyalancana Karya Satya XX award. His publications include studies on lightweight high-speed fins, modeling of coal spontaneous combustion in stockpiles, and effects of heat exchangers on controlling spontaneous combustion in coal piles.
