Ward Peeters is a Lecturer in Linguistics at the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics within Monash University’s Faculty of Arts. He holds a BA and MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and a PhD in Linguistics, awarded in 2018 by the same university. His doctoral research investigated the affordances of digital language for language education, bridging linguistic analysis and network theory. Peeters has coordinated research projects on computer-supported collaborative language learning in Australia, Belgium, Japan, the Netherlands, and South Africa. He has served as Visiting Professor at Kanda University of International Studies (Japan) since December 2018 and is Director of the Master of Applied Linguistics at Monash University.
Peeters’ research specializations include digital discourse in language learning contexts, language acquisition and development, learning analytics, network analysis, corpus linguistics, and second language acquisition. Key publications feature “Citizens’ perspectives on science communication” (Smeets et al., 2025, Journal of Science Communication), “Using cognitive behaviour therapy-based techniques for decreasing foreign language speaking anxiety and increasing confidence among EFL students: An intervention study” (Curry & Peeters, 2025, TESOL in Context), “Different times, different measures: monitoring shifting self-regulation strategies for language learning in higher education across face-to-face, online and hybrid instruction” (Peeters & Ito Maitland, 2024, Advances in Quantitative Ethnography), “To screen or not to screen: Exploring shifts in university students’ awareness of self-regulation for language learning across face-to-face, online and hybrid instruction” (Peeters & Ito Maitland, 2024, Proceedings of the International CALL Research Conference), and “Affective support for self-regulation in mobile-assisted language learning” (Viberg, Kukulska-Hulme & Peeters, 2023, International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning). His contributions to the field are recognized through awards including the Best Overall Paper Award (2020, with Viberg & Saqr), Best Paper Award (2022, with Viberg & Kukulska-Hulme), Teaching Excellence Award (2025), and competitive fellowships for “The network effect on academic and professional foreign language learning through the use of social media” (2015) and “Towards efficacy-driven online learning, a linguistic social network analysis of peer interaction” (2018). Peeters serves as Editor of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics (John Benjamins Publishing) and TESOL in Context (ACTA).
