About Warren

Warren Seider is a Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in the Engineering faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught and conducted research since 1967. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1962, an M.S. in 1963, and a Ph.D. in 1966, both from the University of Michigan. Seider's research focuses on process analysis, simulation, design, and control, emphasizing phase and chemical equilibria, chemical reaction systems, integration of stiff differential equations, azeotropic distillation, heat and power integration, supercritical CO2 extraction, Czochralski crystallization, algae growth to biofuels and bioproducts, nonlinear analysis and control, polymerization reactor control, safety and risk analysis, microfluidics control, and electrical power generation with CO2 sequestration. For over 40 years, he has coordinated the department's capstone design project course, utilizing projects from practicing engineers in the Philadelphia area. In 1969, he helped organize the CACHE Corporation (Computer Aids for Chemical Engineering Education), serving as its chairman on two occasions and remaining active for more than 50 years. He and his students contributed to the development of the ASPEN process simulator and multimedia instructional materials for its use.

Seider has co-authored seven textbooks, including Product and Process Design Principles: Synthesis, Analysis, and Evaluation and FLOWTRAN Simulation: An Introduction, as well as 165 journal articles. His seminal contributions to chemical engineering research and education over six decades were recognized with the 2023 AIChE Founders Award, 2022 election as Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2011 AIChE F.J. Van Antwerpen Award, 2008 AIChE recognition as one of 30 authors of groundbreaking chemical engineering books, 2005 election as AIChE Fellow, 2004 AIChE Warren K. Lewis Award, 1992 AIChE Computing in Chemical Engineering Award, and election as AIChE Director in 1983. He has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of Computers and Chemical Engineering, chaired AIChE's CAST Division and Publication Committee, and significantly advanced computer-aided methods in chemical engineering education and practice.
