About Wayne

Dr Wayne Hutchison is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Science at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He serves as the Physics and Oceanography Stream Coordinator and as the Physical Science research lead in the Condensed Matter & Materials Physics group. His expertise includes magnetism and magnetic materials, magnetic structures, magnetic resonance, very low temperature physics, and condensed matter measurements using hyperfine interaction techniques. Hutchison's research spans the electronic and magnetic properties of condensed matter and superconductivity, environmental nanotechnology, condensed matter characterisation technique development, and quantum information, computation, and communication. He contributes to understanding fundamental properties of natural and advanced materials with applications in magnetic and electronic devices, optical signal processing, data storage, nanoscale functionality, ionising radiation dosimetry, imaging, and magnetic refrigeration.

Dr Hutchison has produced an extensive body of work, including 193 journal articles, 13 book chapters, 82 conference papers, 5 conference posters, 5 theses or dissertations, and 11 preprints. Key publications feature "Tunable Negative Thermal Expansion in Fe/Cr-Substituted Nd2Co17 Compounds via Magnetoelastic Coupling" (Advanced Science, 2026), "Impact of Controlled Magneto-Structural Coupling in MnCoGe-Based Compounds on the Design of Multifunctional Materials for Technological Advances" (Advanced Science, 2025), "Effects of Fe substitution for Mn on structural, magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of TbMn2-xFexSi2" (Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 2024), and "Persistent Spectral Hole-Burning and Zeeman Effect of X-ray-Induced Sm2+ in CaF2:Sm3+ Nanocrystals" (Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2023). His investigations cover magnetocaloric effects in intermetallics like PrMn1.6Fe0.4Ge2 and RNiAl4, negative thermal expansion in Ni-doped MnCoGe, and magnetic structures in various compounds. Hutchison offers $35,000 AUD PhD scholarships to high-achieving students interested in his research.
